## What is Lyophilization

Lyophilization (freeze-drying) is the usual way peptides are prepared for storage. The peptide solution is frozen, then placed under vacuum so the water leaves as vapour, leaving a dry powder.

Most of the chemical reactions that degrade a peptide, such as hydrolysis and deamidation, need water (SRC-01). Removing it is why the dry powder keeps far longer than the same peptide in solution. The exact shelf life depends on the compound and formulation, and for most research peptides it has not been published.

## Quality Markers: Good vs Red Flags

| Marker | Good Sign | Red Flag |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Color | White to off-white, uniform powder | Yellow, brown, or discolored |
| Texture | Fine, fluffy, easily dissolves | Clumped, crystalline, or oily |
| Smell | Essentially odorless | Strong chemical or solvent odor |
| Solubility | Dissolves to a clear, colourless solution | Cloudy solution, particles remaining |
| Packaging | Sealed vial, batch number labeled | Loose seal, no batch, no expiry |
| Batch report | Names the laboratory, the batch, what it covers and does not, with a verification key | No report, or a testing claim that names no laboratory, batch or scope |

Our partner and supplier lists research vials in pesos. The checks on this page apply to any vial on arrival, including theirs. ## Lyophilized vs Pre-Reconstituted

### Lyophilized (Powder)

- + Keeps far longer than solution

- + Reconstituted only when needed

- + Easier to inspect visually

- + More tolerant of transit

- + The usual form for research peptides

### Pre-Reconstituted (Liquid)

- ~ No reconstitution step

- ~ Much shorter shelf life

- ~ Cannot assess pre-mixing quality

- ~ Stability depends on storage

- ~ Higher degradation risk in transit

## FAQ

### What does lyophilized mean for peptides, and why does it matter?

Lyophilization is freeze-drying: the peptide solution is frozen, then placed under vacuum so the water leaves as vapour, leaving a dry powder. Most of the chemical reactions that degrade a peptide, such as hydrolysis and deamidation, need water, so the dry powder keeps far longer than the same peptide in solution. The exact shelf life depends on the compound and the formulation, and for most research peptides it has not been published.

### How can a lyophilized peptide vial be checked for quality?

A sound vial holds a uniform white or off-white powder, often as a solid cake or fluffy mass, in a sealed vial with a batch number on the label. After reconstitution the solution is clear and colourless with no visible particles. None of these checks shows identity or purity. Only a laboratory report for that batch, naming the laboratory, what the test covers and what it does not, with a verification key, speaks to what is in the vial.
