Read the bottom right cell as the practical ceiling. Once a single measurement exceeds the barrel you either split it across two draws or you reconstitute more concentrated, and the second is almost always the better answer.
Insulin syringes are sold over the counter at Mercury Drug, Watsons, Southstar and Generika, and they are stocked because of the diabetic population rather than for anything to do with research compounds. Ask for insulin syringes by barrel size. The three common formats are 0.3ml, 0.5ml and 1.0ml, all of them U-100.
The 0.3ml barrel is the most accurate for small volumes because its marks are spread further apart, and it is the one worth asking for if the calculator is returning readings under 30 units. Bacteriostatic water is the harder item to source locally, which is covered separately in the bacteriostatic water sourcing guide.
Divide the vial size in milligrams by the millilitres of bacteriostatic water you added. That gives concentration in mg per ml. Divide the quantity you want by that concentration to get a volume in ml, then multiply by 100, because a U-100 insulin syringe marks 100 units to the millilitre. A 10mg vial reconstituted with 2ml is 5mg/ml, so 2mg occupies 0.4ml, which is 40 units.
There is no single correct volume. More water means the same quantity occupies more of the barrel, which is easier to measure accurately but uses more syringe volume. 2ml into a 10mg vial gives 5mg/ml, which puts most working quantities in a readable part of the barrel. 1ml gives 10mg/ml, which is harder to measure in small increments. The calculator above shows the consequence of either choice before you commit to it.
Because that is the finest graduation an insulin barrel actually carries. A tool that tells you to draw 37.83 units is describing a measurement the syringe cannot make. The exact figure is shown underneath the rounded one so you can see how much you are rounding by, and if the gap bothers you, changing the diluent volume is the fix.
U-100 means 100 units per millilitre, and it is the standard for human insulin syringes worldwide, including everything sold in Philippine pharmacies. U-40 exists but is a veterinary standard. Using U-40 markings with U-100 maths, or the reverse, produces a two-and-a-half-fold measurement error, which is why this calculator only does U-100 rather than offering a choice that invites the mistake.
Sterile water contains no preservative, so a vial reconstituted with it has no protection against microbial growth once the stopper has been pierced. Bacteriostatic water carries 0.9% benzyl alcohol for exactly that reason. Sterile water is generally treated as single-use, which changes the arithmetic in the calculator above: doses per vial effectively becomes one.
