MOTS-c Manila: Walk-Up Sourcing

Two populations dominate the MOTS-c mail from this part of the city and they arrive from opposite directions.

The first is students and junior researchers out of the medical, nursing and biology programmes clustered through the university belt. They are the most technically capable readers I have, they treat supplier marketing with open contempt, and they are usually writing to check an interpretation rather than to buy. Several have pointed out things I had glossed over, including that the exercise-capacity findings people quote most enthusiastically were in aged mice specifically, which changes how the result should be read.

The second is hospital staff on rotating shifts, generally a bit older, generally interested for personal rather than academic reasons, and generally short of both money and sleep. They come to MOTS-c through the fatigue and mitochondrial framing rather than the metabolic one.

Neither group is well served by the way this compound is usually sold, which assumes a buyer with a condo, a fridge, a car and disposable income. Manila proper has the least of all four.

This is the hardest handoff environment in the National Capital Region and there is no clever technique that fixes it. The building stock is old, most of it has no lobby, no concierge and no package room, and the streets around Ermita, Malate and the university belt are narrow enough that a rider on a bike still loses time.

MOTS-c is close to the best-case compound for these conditions. Dry sealed powder in insulation absorbs a wait on a hot street or an hour at a guard desk in a way nothing shipped in solution would. If you are running anything here that arrives already reconstituted, this district will punish you for it. MOTS-c will not.

This is the section that matters most in Manila proper and it is the one people want least to hear.

Dry, sealed and unopened, a MOTS-c vial is undemanding: cool, dark and out of the sun. Reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, it needs 2 to 8 degrees continuously, an insulated pouch whenever it travels, and disposal at fourteen days. Old Manila housing rarely provides the first of those reliably. Shared fridges in bedspacer arrangements, units with unpredictable power, and long brownouts are ordinary conditions here rather than exceptions, and none of them are compatible with a temperature band that narrow.

The practical read: do not reconstitute a vial you cannot keep cold for the week it takes to use. A 10mg vial at the commonly cited 5mg dose is two injections, so you finish it fast, and there is never a reason to have more than one open. If your refrigeration is genuinely unreliable, the honest conclusion is that this is not the district or the housing situation to run an injectable peptide from, and no amount of insulated packaging changes that.

A Manila-specific caution worth putting on the page. The research record for MOTS-c lists hypoglycaemia in a fasted state at higher doses among its rare reported effects. This district has the highest concentration of rotating-shift healthcare workers in the country, and eating patterns on a night roster are erratic by definition.

That combination is not a prediction of anything. It is a reason to have a baseline panel and a doctor involved rather than running a metabolic research compound off the back of a twelve-hour shift on an empty stomach. The compound has no human efficacy data behind it and no clinical monitoring pathway, which means the monitoring is entirely on you.

The message I send most often to this district, more or less verbatim: the papers are free and the vial is not, and at your stage the papers are the better purchase.

MOTS-c is a genuinely interesting molecule. Encoded inside the mitochondrial genome rather than the nuclear one, identified in 2015 by Lee and Cohen at USC, and characterised across the preclinical literature for AMPK activation, FOXO signalling, mitochondrial biogenesis and nuclear translocation under metabolic stress. Reynolds 2021 in Nature Communications describes it as an exercise-induced regulator of age-dependent physical decline in mice. That is a good afternoon of reading and a legitimately interesting piece of biology.

What it is not is a compound with human efficacy data. There is none. Nothing published supports a metabolic, body-composition or physical-capacity outcome in a person, and anyone who tells you otherwise is extrapolating from a rodent. Given that, and given that a 10mg vial is two doses at PHP 4,200 to 5,500, spending a month of a junior salary to self-experiment on an unvalidated dose is a poor trade.
