Saxenda is Novo Nordisk's brand name for liraglutide dosed for weight management. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, the same drug class as semaglutide and the GLP-1 half of tirzepatide, delivered by a multi-dose pen with a dial. The distinguishing feature is the schedule: liraglutide has a short enough half-life that it is injected once every day rather than once a week.

Chronologically it came first. Liraglutide was the GLP-1 that established the class in weight management before semaglutide arrived and reset expectations, and before tirzepatide arrived and reset them again. That history is why it is still here. Pharmacies, prescribers, and distributors in this country have years of experience handling it, and a supply chain with years of habit behind it does not evaporate because a newer molecule got the headlines.

Here is the market dynamic that makes this page worth writing. The weekly pens are the ones under global demand pressure. Across the pen market in Metro Manila I have watched Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro go intermittent, empty out over weekends, and reach provincial branches later and thinner than metro flagships. Saxenda is not the product everyone in the world is fighting over, which means the pharmacist who cannot fill your weekly prescription can often fill a daily one.

I want to be precise about the limit of that claim. I am describing a general pattern in a market I watch, not auditing branch-level inventory. I have not called a national sample of branches for Saxenda stock, and I am not going to name specific counters as reliable for it. The operational advice is unchanged from everything else I write about pen sourcing: phone first, get the quote and the stock answer in the same call, and do not spend a Saturday driving to a counter you have not spoken to.

It is also a prescription medication, so the entry point is the same as for the weekly pens. An endocrinology consult at a major hospital produces the prescription, and the hospital pharmacy is generally the more reliable fill on the day of the consult even at a markup. A single Saxenda 6mg/ml pre-filled pen lists at ₱3,380 at Southstar Drug and MedsGo. MedsGo lists a three-pen pack at ₱10,140, the same rate per pen. Watsons showed ₱2,366.70 for a pen during a 30 percent promotion, which is a promotion rather than the shelf price. Now the arithmetic that the per-pen figure hides, because the daily schedule makes Saxenda pricing genuinely easy to misread. A weekly pen carries four doses, so the pen price is roughly the monthly cost and the comparison is trivial. A daily pen is consumed by dose volume, not by week count. A Saxenda pen holds 18mg of liraglutide, and at the 3mg maintenance dose that is six days of injections. A 30-day month is therefore about five pens, or roughly ₱16,900 at the list price. Titration months cost less because the early doses are smaller.

That table inverts the assumption most buyers arrive with. Saxenda has one of the lowest per-pen prices on the Philippine shelf and, at maintenance dosing, one of the highest monthly costs. Note the Trulicity row for the same trap in reverse: that pen is cheaper still, but it carries a single weekly dose rather than four, so four pens make a month. Roughly 365 injections a year against roughly 52. That ratio is the entire practical argument, and it is not the trivial inconvenience it sounds like on paper. A weekly injection is an event you schedule, and a scheduled event survives travel, a bad week at work, and a two-day trip where the bag got packed in a hurry. A daily injection is a habit, and habits fail at the edges.

The tropical edge is specific to this country and worth naming. A pen in use has to be carried and stored properly, and a daily schedule means seven times as many opportunities to leave one in a hot car, forget it at an office desk over a weekend, or discover on arrival in Boracay that it spent the flight in the wrong bag. There is a counterargument, and it is honest. Short half-life cuts both ways. If a compound disagrees with you, a daily drug clears faster than a weekly one, and some people find the daily rhythm easier to titrate through the rough first weeks. That is a conversation for a prescriber who knows your history, not a preference this site can rank for you.

Two forces, and only one of them is the injection count. The first is adherence, covered above. The second is the published trial data on the newer molecules. Semaglutide 2.4mg produced about 14.9% average body weight reduction in STEP 1 in 2021, and tirzepatide produced about 22.5% in SURMOUNT-1 in 2022, with SURMOUNT-5 comparing the two directly and tirzepatide ahead. The force pulling the other way is supply, and in the Philippines it is real. A weekly pen you cannot find is worth less than a daily pen you can.
